Are file transfer protocol (FTP) Sites Secure?

FTP is a standard protocol that uses the Internet TCP/IP protocol to transfer files from on computer to another. FTP is most commonly used to upload and download files which are then available to be viewed by multiple computers with a vast range of operating capacities. Connecting to an FTP server often can be rather difficult and is normally the most tedious step in the file transfer process. Once a connection has been established servers send/ receive various codes to/from FTP clients. FTP clients are the programs that initiate and maintain a connection to an FTP server. Some codes relayed between FTP clients and servers will represent errors, but most of the FTP clients and servers simply communicate the status of the connection. FTP clients are vital in ensuring that FTP sites run smoothly.

FTP was not intended to be used as a secure protocol for transferring data. Many file transfer services are able to ensure security now by encrypting files during transfer and after they have been stored. Many IT professionals have argued that FTP sites are often extremely hard to configure and maintain. FTP site maintenance problems as well the lack of security are two of the driving forces why FTP  use has become less prevalent. Modern day file transfer services out compete traditional FTP sites in every way because they do everything they do and more. Many different businesses around the world are now using these file transfer services on a daily basis. These services have to constantly improve their technology in order to effectively compete in a growing industry.
